Nel corso degli anni, l'enigmatico Banksy ha cercato di rimanere fuori dalle luci della ribalta. Nonostante abbia catturato l'attenzione di molte celebrità ed il suo lavoro sia oggetto di un diffuso "furto pubblico" nella speranza di fare soldi facili, Banksy raramente ha parlato. Gran Bretagna Il quotidiano The Sun ha parlato con l'artista e guardato alle sue origini, alla sua celebrità. "Ho cominciato a dipingere graffiti quando avevo circa 14 o giù di lì, e la gente chiede sempre, yer, che cosa ti fa fare?
"Ma la questione è stata sempre molto, perché non lo fai?"
"Ho iniziato a dipingere graffiti nel classico stile New York dei grandi lettere e caratteri, ma non sono mai stato molto bravo. Disegnavo sempre le cose o troppo ravvicinate o troppo distanti.
"Così ho dovuto trovare un modo di renderlo più veloce, altrimenti ero fuori".
"Voglio dire che sono molto efficienti,gli stencil. Si arriva a mettere qualcosa in poco tempo ed è difficile che sia pasticciato.
"Quando mi sono trasferito a Londra ho iniziato a dipingere. Non sempre pensato che non ci fosse nulla di male in questo.
"Lei vive in città e tutto il tempo vi sono segni che indicano cosa fare e cartelloni che cercano di vendere qualcosa.
"E ho sempre pensato che era giusto iniziare a rispondere un po', suppongo. Che la città non deve essere solo una conversazione a senso unico. "Non capisco perché dovrei soltanto fare pareti" mi sono detto, così ho iniziato a fare statue e atti di vandalismo che hanno portato ad atti di vandalismo nei parchi. E da lì ha iniziato ad andare davvero.
Uno dei momenti più memorabili della carriera di Banksy è stato quando ha sabotato l'avvio di album musicale di Paris Hilton.
Riuscì a sostituire 500 copie con il suo CD nel settembre 2006. Sulla copertina si sovrappone l'immagine di una testa di cane su Parigi, e ha aggiunto un adesivo che diceva: include brani "Perché sono famosa?Che cosa ho fatto? e Che cosa sono io per?"
Per la prima volta spiega come l'ha tirato fuori. "Avevo parlato con il DJ Danger Mouse di cercare di vandalizzare qualche atto pop o dirottare qualcuno che è stato in classifica.
"E poi all'improvviso abbiamo scoperto che Paris Hilton stava per fare un disco. E abbiamo avuto come tre settimane per girarlo prima che il CD è stato nei negozi.
"E 'stata un'idea che era solo in attesa di Paris Hilton per accadere. Ho pasticciato con la grafica quindi Danger Mouse ha trasformato l'album in questo brano in una lunga dove si ripete solo se stessa più e più volte.
"L'abbiamo confezionato, lo abbiamo messo nelle copertine e quindi io e altri due ragazzi li portarono in tutto il paese.
"ne abbiamo messi fuori 500, che probabilmente si è rivelata una buona percentuale di quanti effettivamente ne fossero stati venduti.Voglio dire, cosa possono fare per lei?
Pensò: "Credo che mi sarebbe piaciuto andare in qualche posto caldo. Così ci siamo ritrovati a Los Angeles, questa città veramente affascinante che ha anche questo lato sporco.
"Ma ... più di ogni altra cosa è il posto più facile del mondo per l'affitto di un elefante." Oggi le opere di Banksy possono costare anche 1 milione di sterline, prendendo un pezzo ad un'asta di Londra con un'offerta telefonica nel 2007.
Banksy ha detto: "Quando i dipinti improvvisamente cominciarono ad andare, io andai in mezzo al nulla e smisi di fare quadri. Ma ... er ... le case d'asta misero in vendita quadri che avevo fatto anni prima ed avevo venduto per pochi soldi. O quadri che avevo scambiato per un taglio di capelli o, yer, un grammo di erba e vedevo un 50 come enorme.
"Ma non posso evitare di pensare che era un po 'più facile quando tutto quello con cui ho dovuto competere era un bidone della spazzatura in un vicolo piuttosto che, sai, un Gainsborough o qualcosa del genere."
Nonostante il successo al di là di suoi sogni più selvaggi, Bansky rimane affettuosamente modesto sul suo lavoro.
"il Graffito è sempre stato una forma d'arte temporanea. È il tuo segno e poi la macchia va via. Voglio dire, la maggior parte è proprio progettato per esser guardato bene da un veicolo in movimento. Non necessariamente nei libri di storia."

Throughout the years, the enigmatic Banksy has sought to remain out of the limelight. Despite capturing the attention of many celebrities and his work being the subject of widespread “public theft” in hopes of making some easy money, Banky has rarely spoken out. Britain’s The Sun newspaper spoke with the artist and touched upon his beginnings, his admissions about being a subpar writer and his stardom. “I STARTED painting graffiti when I was about 14 or so, and people always ask, yer know, what makes you do it?
“But the question was always really, why would you not do it?”
“I started painting graffiti in the classic New York style of big letters and characters but I was never very good at it. I always used to get things too close together or too far apart and it used to take me ages.
“So I had to come up with a way of making it quicker, otherwise I was gonna get nicked.”
“I mean they’re very efficient, stencils. You get to put something up in very little time and it’s hard to mess it up.
“When I moved to London I just carried on painting. I never saw that there was anything bad in it.
“You live in the city and all the time there are signs telling you what to do and billboards trying to sell you something.
“And I always felt that it was all right to answer back a little bit, I suppose. That the city shouldn’t just be a one-way conversation “I didn’t see why you’d settle for just walls. So I started vandalising statues and that led to vandalising parks. It just kept going really.
One of the most memorable moments in Banksy’s career was when he sabotaged the launch of Paris Hilton’s music album.
He managed to replace 500 copies with his own CD in September 2006. On the cover he superimposed a picture of a dog’s head over Paris’s and added a sticker that said it included tracks Why Am I Famous?, What Have I Done? and What Am I For?
For the first time he explains how he pulled it off. “I’d been talking to the DJ Danger Mouse about trying to vandalise some pop act or hijack somebody who was in the charts.
“And then suddenly we found out that Paris Hilton was going to make a record. And we had like three weeks to turn it around before the CD was in the shops.
“It was an idea that was just waiting for Paris Hilton to happen. I messed around with the visuals then Danger Mouse sort of turned the album into this one long track where she just repeats herself over and over again.
“We packaged it up, we put it in the cases and then me and two other guys split up and went across the country reverse shoplifting.
“We put out 500 of ‘em, which I think probably turned out to be a fair percentage of what she actually sold. I mean, what can they do you for? Littering? Maybe? I guess?”
He says: “I guess I fancied going somewhere a little bit warmer. So we ended up in Los Angeles and, yer know, it’s this really glamorous town that also has this dirty side to it.
“But… above anything else it’s the easiest place in the world to rent an elephant.” Today Banksy’s works can fetch £1million, with Brad Pitt famously picking up a piece at a London auction with a phone bid in 2007.
Banksy says: “When the paintings suddenly started going for, like, really big money it definitely weirded me out, and I kind of went away to the middle of nowhere and I stopped making any more paintings. But… er… the whole time the auction houses were just selling paintings that I’d done years before and sold for not much money. Or paintings that I traded for a haircut or, yer know, an ounce of weed and they were going for like 50 grand.
“But I can’t help feeling it was a bit easier when all I had to compete against was a dustbin down an alley rather than, you know, a Gainsborough or something.”
Despite success beyond his wildest dreams, Bansky remains endearingly modest about his work.
“Graffiti’s always been a temporary art form. You make your mark and then they scrub it off. I mean, most of it is just designed to look good from a moving vehicle. Not necessarily in the history books.
