Personalmente ho sempre considerato Joe Strummer un poeta, capace di raccontare nelle sue canzoni gli aspetti sociali del mondo a cavallo tra gli anni Settanta e Ottanta.In un certo senso, era anche un po’ come un hooligan il leader dei Clash: pronto a guidare i suoi compagni alla rivolta dall’alto del palco, pronto a lanciarsi in mezzo alla mischia, senza paura di farsi male. Questo suo modo di essere l’ha portato a capire l’importanza che un musicista riveste e fin da subito riuscì a comprendere il vero potere di una canzone, capace di cambiare la visione del mondo per chi l'ascolta. Così, cambiare la visione delle cose divenne la sua massima aspirazione.
Mentre scrivo queste parole, la mia stanza è percorsa dalle note di “Lost in the Supermarket”. La canzone che i CLASH hanno inciso sul loro album di maggiore successo: LONDON CALLING. Tra tutte le canzoni di Strummer & co, questa è forse una tra le più tranquille che abbiano mai suonato. Lentamente, mentre il mondo fuori scorre, le pareti della mia stanza si ovattano. Il ritmo incalza e la voce prepotente di Strummer rompe gli indugi, canta di una sua paura, dice di essersi perso in un Supermercato. Forse si sente solo, perché si accorge che intorno nessuno lo comprende. Nessuno forse lo ha mai compreso fino infondo. Credo che oggi Joe non sarebbe molto contento di sapere che, anche dopo i suoi sforzi, a distanza di anni le cose non accennano a migliorare, anzi peggiorano.
Il futuro non è scritto, le pagine sono ancora vuote, cerchiamo di dare un valore alla nostra vita e non lasciamo incompiuto un sogno di un uomo che si faceva chiamare lo strimpellatore. R.I.P.

However, in some senses, he was a bit like a hooligan: ready to guide his companions to revolt from the stage, ready to launch into the middle of the fray, without fear of injury.
