Oltre ad essere il massimo esponente della street-art inglese, Banksy è uno tra i più quotati artisti al mondo. Le sue opere sono principalmente composte da stencil, che vengono usati per tappezzare i muri delle città. Ma, chi è Banksy?? Questa è la domanda da un milione di dollari, perché ancora dopo anni nessuno è riuscito a scoprirlo. Qualcuno dice che sia un uomo sulla trentina di nome Robert Banks di Bristol, una contea a sud ovest dell’Inghilterra. Altri invece, sostengono che in realtà Banksy ed il famoso street artist Nick Walker siano la stessa persona e nel maggio dello scorso anno molte riviste d’arte hanno indagato sull’identità segreta di quest’ultimo. Walker ha però smentito come da copione ogni ipotesi, affermando di aver conosciuto Banksy a Bristol verso la fine degli anni novanta. Il mistero si infittisce.
Ci troviamo di fronte ad una sorta di anti-artista, un personaggio che rifiuta di mostrare il suo volto. Forse vuole lasciare più spazio alle sue opere?! Oppure, non è altro che un piano escogitato per alimentare maggiormente l’interesse intorno a lui?? Quello che sappiamo è che, nemmeno una mostra personale tenuta nella sua città natale ha fatto uscire allo scoperto l’artista, abilmente mischiato tra gli addetti ai lavori. Una delle poche persone, forse l’unica che è riuscito a guardare negli occhi Banksy è stato Simon Hattenstone. Il giornalista che nel luglio del 2003 ha avuto modo di intervistarlo in un pub per conto del “The Guardian”, raccogliendo la sua esperienza in un’intervista presente sul sito del quotidiano (http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2003/jul/17/art.artsfeatures).

Nel 2005 Banksy si reca in Israele per contestare a suo modo la costruzione del muro che divide i territori occupati. Sul lato palestinese disegna ben 9 opere in stile “Trompe l’Oeil“, uno stile che pur essendo disegnato su uno sfondo piatto dà un senso di terza dimensione. Non contento dei muri però, l’inglese ha anche incontrato il mondo della musica, realizzando la copertina dell’ultimo album dei BLUR:”Think Thank”. Un genio?! Decisamente si. Una persona che è riuscito a prendere l’arte grafica essenzialmente più semplice, trasformandola nel veicolo di mille messaggi contro la nostra società, non può che essere geniale e tra un opera e un'altra, Banksy trova anche il tempo di ridersela. Un suo murale è stato comprato per 30.000 sterline da due collezionisti. Il problema è che l’opera è stata imbrattata da alcuni writers e ci vorranno altri soldi per restaurarla, inoltre Banksy non ha mai autenticato l’opera ed in futuro il murale potrebbe perdere di valore. Besides being the greatest exponent of British street art, Banksy is one of the most renowned artists in the world. His works are mainly composed of stencils, which are used to upholster the walls of the city. But, who is Banksy? That is the question a million dollars, because even after years nobody could find out. Some say that a man in his thirties named Robert Banks of Bristol, a county in southwest England. Others argue that in fact the famous street artist Banksy and Nick Walker are the same person and in May of last year many art magazines have investigated the identity of that secret. But Walker has denied any possibility like a script, saying that he knew Banksy in Bristol in the late nineties. The mystery deepens.

We are facing a sort of anti-artist, a character who refuses to show his face. Maybe he wants to leave more space to his works?! Or is nothing other than a plan devised to fuel more interest around him? What we know is that even a solo exhibition held in his hometown has come out the artist, cleverly mixed among experts. One of the few people, perhaps the only one who managed to look into the eyes Banksy was Simon Hattenstone.
